We all hear that spending time in nature is good for us, right? Well, not only is it true, it is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health.
What is grounding?
Grounding is when the human body has direct contact with the earth’s surface. Walking barefoot, laying in the grass, or any other activity that connects your flesh to the surface of the earth.
In 2015 researchers from the University of California (Irvine) published a study, The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, discussing their findings on the effects of grounding on inflammation and healing. The study sought to expand on earlier research as suggested in the following quote extracted from the abstract of the study:
Multi-disciplinary research has revealed that electrically conductive contact of the human body with the surface of the Earth (grounding or earthing) produces intriguing effects on physiology and health. Such effects relate to inflammation, immune responses, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response | JIR. Why is direct contact important?
When the human body comes into contact with the earth’s surface the effects are much like how a battery is recharged. Free electrons flow all over and into the body creating an “antioxidant microenviornment” around any source of inflammation. When this happens, it increases the body’s ability to heal, as well as reduce inflammation in and around any injury or inflammation from a chronic or un-diagnosed condition.
What conditions can grounding/earthing help?
Grounding helps the sleep-wake cycle, reduces stress, pain, reduces wound healing duration, symptoms from chronic conditions, and all systems of the body. The list is extensive, there is currently nothing reported that grounding/earthing doesn’t help or improve.
What if I don’t want to be barefoot or lay on the ground outside?
If you don’t feel comfortable laying on the grass, don’t have access to walk on a beach or the weather doesn’t permit grounding, you can use other sources of electrons to get your grounding fix. There are patches, bracelets, throws, computer mats, and bed sheets that can offer the same therapeutic benefits. Earthlink.com is just one of many online stores that specialize in grounding products (and no, Gratiu is not affiliated with Earthlink!)
Is grounding only for people who are ill or have a chronic condition?
No! Grounding/earthing is for everyone! The free-flowing electrons that the body receives during grounding can be stored in the body and used as preventative medicine as well. The more time you spend grounding the better off your “reserves” will be.
Get out and enjoy nature. Connect with the earth as much as possible. Your mind, body and soul will benefit so much from this simple and relaxing practice.
